What is 316L Stainless Steel?

316L stainless steel is an iron alloy containing a minimum of 16% chromium, 10% nickel, and 2% molybdenum. The "L" designation indicates low carbon content, which improves its resistance to corrosion in aggressive environments including salt water and body chemistry.

The chromium content is the key mechanism. When exposed to oxygen, chromium forms a thin, stable layer of chromium oxide on the surface of the metal. This passive layer is self-repairing - if scratched, it reforms on contact with air. It is this layer that prevents the underlying iron from oxidising and gives stainless steel its resistance to tarnish.

The molybdenum content differentiates 316L from the more common 304 grade. Molybdenum significantly increases resistance to chloride corrosion - the reason 316L is specified for marine and surgical applications, and why it is the appropriate choice for jewellery worn in the sea, in swimming pools, and during exercise.

Why does jewellery tarnish - and why doesn't 316L?

Tarnish occurs when a metal reacts with oxygen, sulphur compounds, or moisture in the air. The most common culprits in everyday jewellery are silver, copper, and brass. Sterling silver tarnishes because it contains copper, which reacts with hydrogen sulphide in the air to form a dark copper sulphide layer. Brass - a copper-zinc alloy - tarnishes for the same reason and also causes the green skin discolouration many people have experienced.

Gold-plated and gold-filled pieces tarnish when the base metal beneath the plating is exposed through wear. Standard electroplated gold is applied in layers measured in microns - thin enough that friction at contact points (ring shanks, bracelet clasps, the back of earring posts) wears through to the base metal within months under daily use.

316L stainless steel does not tarnish because its chromium oxide passive layer prevents any surface oxidation reaction from taking hold. There is no base metal degradation to expose, no copper to react with skin acids, and no surface layer to wear through. The corrosion resistance is intrinsic to the alloy, not applied to it.

PVD Coating on Stainless Steel

Most stainless steel jewellery sold in the UK is finished with PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coating to achieve a gold or silver colour. PVD is a vacuum-based process in which metal is vaporised and deposited onto the stainless steel surface at a molecular level, forming a bond significantly harder and more adhesion-resistant than standard electroplating.

The practical difference matters. Standard gold electroplating deposits a thin layer measured in microns that sits on the surface and wears away through friction and exposure. PVD coating bonds at the atomic level, producing a finish that is 3-5 times harder than electroplated gold by surface hardness measurement. The result is a finish that does not chip, peel, or fade under normal daily wear conditions.

It is worth being clear about what PVD does not do. It does not make jewellery impervious to all conditions indefinitely. Prolonged exposure to harsh chemicals - bleach, strong cleaning products, some perfumes - will eventually affect any surface finish. What PVD provides is durability sufficient for genuine everyday wear, including water, sweat, and normal skin contact, over a period of years rather than months.

316L stainless steel vs sterling silver. Sterling silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% copper) tarnishes with regular exposure to air and moisture and requires polishing to maintain appearance. It is softer than stainless steel and more susceptible to scratching. Stainless steel requires no maintenance and does not tarnish under normal wear conditions.

316L stainless steel vs gold-plated brass. Gold-plated brass uses a copper-zinc base metal with a thin gold layer applied by electroplating. The base metal tarnishes and can cause green skin discolouration as the plating wears. 316L stainless steel contains no copper and does not cause skin discolouration regardless of wear.

Is Stainless Steel Safe for Sensitive Skin?

316L stainless steel is widely classified as hypoallergenic and is the standard material for surgical implants, body piercing jewellery, and medical devices that contact skin and tissue. Its biocompatibility is established in clinical literature - the low carbon content and molybdenum addition reduce the risk of sensitisation compared to standard 304 grade.

The primary cause of metal allergy in jewellery is nickel. 316L stainless steel does contain nickel (approximately 10-14% by composition), but nickel in a stable alloy behaves differently to free nickel ions. The EU Nickel Directive sets limits on nickel release from items in prolonged skin contact. Compliant 316L stainless steel jewellery releases nickel at rates well below the 0.5 micrograms per cm² per week threshold set by the regulation.

For the majority of people with metal sensitivities, 316L stainless steel is well tolerated. For individuals with a confirmed nickel allergy as diagnosed by patch testing, pure titanium or niobium are the more conservative choices. If you have a diagnosed nickel allergy rather than a general sensitivity, it is worth checking whether a brand's stainless steel is certified to EU nickel release standards before purchasing.

How to care for stainless steel jewellery

316L stainless steel requires minimal maintenance compared to silver or gold-plated pieces. The following practices will keep PVD-coated stainless steel in good condition over years of daily wear.

Cleaning. Warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap, applied with a soft cloth. For detailed pieces (chains, settings with stones), a soft toothbrush works well. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry. Do not leave pieces to air dry in a damp state, as water deposits can dull the surface over time.

Storage. Store pieces separately to avoid scratching between items. A soft pouch or lined jewellery box is sufficient. Avoid leaving pieces in humid environments such as bathroom surfaces.

What to avoid. Harsh chemicals including bleach, chlorine-based cleaning products, and strong acids will degrade PVD coating over time even though they will not affect the underlying stainless steel. Apply perfume and body spray before putting jewellery on, not after - the alcohol and chemical compounds in fragrance are among the most common causes of premature wear on any plated surface.

Water exposure. 316L stainless steel with PVD coating is designed for daily wear including water contact. Showering, swimming in fresh water, and gym use are all within normal wear parameters. Salt water and chlorinated pools are more aggressive environments - pieces will hold up, but rinsing with fresh water after sea or pool swimming is good practice.
